The international course syllabus is completely professional; not only does it adhere to the STCW code in full but also takes into account the current working practices found on the super yachts. All the subjects are covered in-depth and many to OOW level and beyond. The maximum class size is 7 persons.

Flag recognitions are currently in process.

Price: 1385,- € + 150,- € exam fees.

Course length: 10 days (+1-2 days for exams).
Total lecture/teaching time: 80 hours approx.


Course location: Antibes (South of France).

Overview:
The HMA Master 200GT/Mate 500GT theory course has gained a significant reputation with professional crew that are looking to be a 1st drive captain of yachts up to 34 mtrs approx or a 1st/2nd Mate of yachts up to 45 mtrs approx.
The modern course content with its international syllabus is taught in a progressive teaching style, that adapts to each students academic abilities, their backgrounds and their experience.

Each student is taught at their own learning pace. No matter the academic level you have, the teaching and course adapt to you in the same way as if you went to do a course at a business school; the teachers will not only teach you but also give you unbiased qualified advice as consultants.

The course is based upon the MCA Master(Y) 200GT STCW coded certification however the course syllabus has been considerably extended by ourselves to reflect the working practices an demands made upon crew on superyachts of between 18mtrs to 40mtrs.

The syllabus is international and adheres to the STCW convention.

Objectives:
This theory course is aimed at crew with experience, not neccessarily on the superyachts, and who are looking to obtain their first captains job or step-up into a Mates position on the larger yachts.

The principal objective of the course is to fill-in missing gaps in each student's knowledge and to build upon their existing knowledge. In many subjects, the course will take you up to OOW or Master 500 level; this is to help you in the future. It's always better to do the ground work now than struggle later when you go up to OOW and beyond.

Entry Requirements:
We need to see you CV beforehand, both yachting and non-yachting. You have to show a minimum of 3000Nm of sea-time, and 60 days at sea. This has to be done on vessels of more than 17mtrs length. Preferably, with some professional yachting experience even if its just for a few weeks helping out as crew. Alternatively, if you have sea-time from the military navy or merchant navy, this can be transferred over.
In all cases, we require two proofs of sea-time; some type of personal official log book as well as letters of testimonial confirming the official log book. We will help you with this so don't worry.

In addition, you need to hold the following certifications:

1. STCW Basic Safdety Training (all 4 modules).
2. Seaman's medical certificate eg. MCA ENG 1 or equiv.
3. Business & Law Level I Master 200GT/Mate 500GT.
Your Questions?

Is this the same course as the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore?
No not at all.
Firstly, the course syllabus of  the RYA Yachtmaster is from the recreational yachting side; and follows the ideas & practices of the RYA.
The HMA course syllabus is international and follows the professional working practices & legal requirements for professional crew.

Is it commercially endorsed?
This is a professional course & certification. The RYA Yachtmaster has a commercial endorsement to it because it is a recreational qualification that can be used commercially.

Is it recognized by the MCA?
We are in the process of application for recogitions from various flag states, please consult with us for an update.

Why is the HMA Master 200GT/Mate 500GT course so much longer and more difficult than the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore?
The main reason is that the Master 200GT/Mate 500GT is a professional course & certification. The RYA Yachtmaster Offshore is a recreational course & qualification that can have a commercial endorsement to it.
The other reasons are that the HMA Master 200GT/Mate 500GT course has to adhere to the STCW convention (that lays down the required study time and content), enabling it to gain worldwide recognition with the other flags.

My English level is not that good?
Under the IMO, it says that you must have a good working knowledge of maritime English. This is different to academic English. We are use to working with all different nationalities and we do make allowances for language problems & help as much as we can.

Everybody tells me to do the RYA Yachtmaster, they say it's easier & less time than the Master 200GT. Why then do this course?
The RYA Yachtmaster syllabus has a recreational syllabus that focuses upon 10-15mtr yachts. The OOW syllabus is a merchant navy syllabus. It's like learning to play the piano but you are going to be playing the guitar. Both are music, better to learn to play the guitar from the beginning.
The HMA Master 200GT/Mate 500 Tons course syllabus is a mixture between military navy practices, merchant navy practices and recreational practices; and that is what essentially professional yachting is all about.

What about the examinations?
There are 5 theory exams; the exams do not have to be done during the course: After finishing each course module, you can choose when you wish to do the exams.
This is a great way of doing it. you do the exam when you feel confident in the subject; what's more we would prefer you to learn the subject for your work than learn just to pass an exam.
The examination processes are strictly controlled through  our own quality management system.

What happens if I have problems with the theory exams?
There is no problem as far as we are concerned, we don't care if it takes us 20 days or 6 months to get you through the course/exams.
The most important thing is that you understand what you are doing and you have the confidence on the boat to do the job that you have been employed to do.
You can do the exams up to 2x or 3x (depending on the exam) before having to re-sit the particular course module once again. Wherever possible, we try to give personal tuition when time permits. All this is free of charge (except for any extra exam fees).
