Course length: 2 days (+0,5 day for exam).
Total lecture/teaching time: 14 hours approx.
Overview:
Maritime business and maritime law are both complex subjects. Often the
student is bewildered and confused by the extent of the detail and the
statements made by the teacher or lecturer that appear, to the student,
to contradict themselves.
All this is great if you are a law student studying to become a lawyer
and talking the same language as the teacher (often a lawyer
themselves). But for many professional yacht crew, it is new language
full of difficult terminologies and statements to understand; and
trying to relate this to real life situations on board the super yachts
is not easy.
The teaching style draws upon taking real life situations or topics,
such as refits, crew employment, charter agreements, etc etc. In each
situation or topic, the possible scenarios are discussed in detail from
the relevant different points of view, e.g. legal jurisdiction, fiscal,
corporate etc.
The discussions are kept intentionally simple and to the point, so that
you can gain a basic understanding of a real life situation, either
concerning business or legal issues, and the relevant possible
scenarios. The course is taught from a layperson's (non-expert) point
of view, from a practical stand-point that is related to your daily
work as professional yacht crew.
The syllabus is international and follows closely the STCW convention.
Objectives:
The HMA Maritime Business & Law Course has been especially
developed for Captains & Mates working on the super yachts of
between 20 mtrs to 50 mtrs. It is also suitable for other executive
crew in a management position, such as Chief Engineer's, Chief
Steward/ess's and Purser's.
The principal objective of the course is for you to understand the
basic principles of maritime law and the business aspects of the super
yacht industry such as contracts and charter agreements. It will also
help you when you have to consult a professional maritime lawyer; by
having a basic understanding of the subject, it is a lot easier to
discuss with them the problem, as well as understanding the advice they
are giving.

Is it compulsory to do this course to qualify for the Master 200Tons/Mate 500Tons?
Yes it is compulsory to do this course and also to pass the Business
& Law Exam -level I. It is required by the MCA and other flag state
administrations.
Why do I have to do this course?
As a Captain or Mate (Officer), you are in a management position and
there are many business and legal issues associated with running a
super yacht. Also, many of the super yachts are constantly moving
between different coastal states and waters; therefore you do need a
good understanding from the subject from an international point of
view.
Is
the Business & Law Exam difficult?
No not really, it is about 1.5 hours long and it mainly consists of
definitions of the different subjects that are within the course
syllabus.
Are there any course entry requirements?
No, there are not. This course is available to everybody.
My English level
is not that good?
Under the IMO, it says that you must have a good working knowledge of
maritime English. This is different to academic English. We are use to
working with all different nationalities and we do make allowances for
language problems & help as much as we can.
Do I get a certificate if I successfully pass the course and exam?
Yes, we will be issuing a course completion certificate.
